Major General Lawton was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism during the Civil War Battle of Atlanta (1864). Over thirty years later, he commanded the 2nd Division at Santiago in the Spanish-American War (1898). He was killed in action during the Philippine-American War just a year later, by Filipino insurrectionists at the Battle of San Mateo in 1899 while commanding the 1st Division. He was the only General Officer killed during the Philippine-American War.
The city of Lawton, Oklahoma is named for him. He is also honored by a statue in Garfield Park in Indianapolis and a plaza in Manila. He is buried in Section 2, Grave 841, Arlington National Cemetery.
