General Meade was a career officer who served during the Seminole Wars, the Mexican War, and in the 1862 Peninsula Campaign. Badly wounded at the Battle of Glendale during the Civil War, he recovered and served at the Battles of Antietam and Fredericksburg. He succeeded General Joseph Hooker as Commander of the Army of the Potomac and days later oversaw the Army of the Potomac achieve a major victory at the Battle of Gettysburg. He led the Army of the Potomac until the end of the war, serving at the Battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor.

Fort Meade in Maryland bears his name.
