This original French aviation poster, signed “Gamy,” was most likely created by Margeurite Montaut, wife of the celebrated French poster artist Ernest Montaut (1878-1909). Ernest Montaut was a pioneer of visually depicting automobile motion at the dawn of the industrial era. He is credited with developing a range of artistic techniques, such as speed lines and distorted perspective, to create the impression of speed, all of which are still used today.
His images documented early developments in the history of motorized transportation, such as motorcycle and motorcar racing, zeppelins, biplanes, and even motorboats. They were known for their displays of action and visual spectacle. Montaut's work was wildly popular in Paris and was shown in fashionable outlets throughout the city.
It is believed that prints signed 'Gamy' were created by Montaut's wife, Marguerite, 'Gamy' being an anagram of her nickname, Magy.
