Henry “Hap” Arnold won his second Mackay Trophy in 1934 when, as a Lieutenant Colonel, he led ten Martin YB-10B bombers on the 8000-mile flight from Bolling Field (Anacostia) to Fairbanks and Juneau, Alaska and back. A painting by Thomas Segars depicting the flight hangs in the Arnold Room on the second floor of the Club. Overly credited with its success, Arnold nonetheless lobbied for recognition of the other airmen who took part. His reputation among some of his peers was tarnished by resentment when he was belatedly awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for the flight in 1937.
