This painting was donated to The Army and Navy Club by the Sons of the Revolution in the District of Columbia, a non-profit fraternal organization founded in 1889. Its members are descendants of soldiers, sailors, and officials who served in the Revolutionary War, and their organization's purpose is to honor and foster the memories of the Revolutionary period and to commemorate the patriotic deeds of their ancestors.

This painting is an impressive copy of the Washington portrait by Gilbert Stuart, the most renowned American portrait artist of the Revolutionary era. Stuart’s original portrait is perhaps the best-known likeness of Washington. Dawson lived and worked in Virginia and New York.
