On August 6, 1945, twelve men were aboard the B-29 bomber Enola Gay, which dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. This photograph was signed by four of those original twelve, and gifted by them to The Army and Navy Club: Colonel Paul W. Tibbets, pilot; Private First Class Richard H. Nelson, VHF radio operator; Captain Thomas Ferebee, bombardier; and Captain Theodore “Dutch” Van Kirk, navigator. Enola Gay was named after Colonel Tibbets’ mother.
